FAQs
Do I need to know how to skate?
Not at all! Our experienced coaches will get you from Bambi-on-ice to Badass-on-wheels level in no time.
Do I need my own skates and safety equipment?
No – if you don’t have your own quad skates we can lend you a pair. We can also provide you with elbow pads, knee pads, wrist guards and a helmet if needed. If you wish to borrow any kit, you MUST let us know in advance so that we can get you kit in the sizes you require. The only safety equipment that we cannot loan is mouthguards – these are necessary and must be fitted to your teeth before the Session.
What should I wear?
Something comfortable that you can move in. Most of our skaters practice in a t-shirt or vest top and leggings or shorts. Remember, you’ll wear knee pads and elbow pads on top, so avoid thick or bulky clothing. No jeans please!
What else should I bring?
Water, spare socks, and a mouthguard pre-moulded to fit your teeth. Sisu-brand mouthguards are favoured by most derby skaters but not the cheapest, so any mouthguard will do to start.
What should I expect from the Taster Session?
We’ll meet you at the entrance, show you to the hall, and then get you kitted up and ready to skate. Then we’ll run through some basic skate skills, play games, and talk a bit about roller derby as a sport. You’ll also receive more information about our New Skaters Programme, which is the next step for anyone interested in playing derby with us!
How do I sign up?
Fill in our sign-up sheet and waiver, which includes a question about your shoe size. We must know this to ensure we have skates ready for you on the day. Register here!
